When Burthred comes courting on Christmas Eve, Meg rejects his advances. She has her heart set on becoming a nun and insists that he call her Christina, the spiritual name she has chosen for herself. I just finished reading Meg and Burthred's story. I am a Catholic so I enjoyed and understood many of the religious references found in the story. I was particularly interested in observing how religious practices have changed over time. I liked the kindness of Burthred, and was impressed with the strong desire of Meg to learn to read. A sweet and fulfilling short story by a talented author. She has such a gift for getting inside the minds and emotions of the characters while setting a pitch perfect scene. This story is about love, redemption, charity, all those things that make Christmas stories loveable.
I don't normally like novellas but I love everything that Joyce DiPastena writes so I am game to read this one.
This was a great little story. Very touching.
While I enjoyed the parts of the story that we were given, I felt that this, while a novella, was too short and therefore incomplete. It just felt like there was so much more that the story could have contained if it went a little farther. Then ending seemed abrupt. I would have enjoyed hearing a little bit more.
This is not a long story, but it is well written. It's interesting to realize how few people learned to read in medieval times. Especially the women. Reading the story of Burthred and Meg/Christina becoming acquainted with each other is a wonderful Christmas story.
This sweet medieval story (novella) is the moment Meg meets Burthred. They've been betrothed since she was born and he was 8 years old. Nearly two decades later, he meets her. Though he would have only her be his wife, she desires another life, one without him or any man. When her reasons are revealed, I loved her even more (and I think Burthred did too)!
This was a great short read. Ms DiPastena never disappoints.
It is no secret that I love Joyce's writing. There is something about her books that just resonate in my heart. I love the way I travel back in time to places that just come alive through Joyce's words. Joyce has a gift for writing and she is a girl that really knows her history. Her research and love for this time period really shine through.
A Candlelight Courting is a short story. I literally devoured it in under an hour (with distractions). While I was utterly satisfied with the whole story and the ending, I still wanted more. More story. More time with these characters. More.
Burthred (in spite of his awful name) is so sweet, so patient and so endearing. I just love him. He slowly breaks down Meg's walls and earns her trust by trusting her with his secrets.
Writing this review has made me want to go back and read this short story again. I think I will. It is the perfect story to cuddle up with as the holidays approach.
